Cong luan bao and the tho moi movement

Nguyen Thanh Thao

The formation and strong development of the so called Tho moi (the new Poetry) in the 1930s provoked heated disputes between modern and traditional minds, between those representing the Tho moi and those in favor of the classical Chinese poetry. The authors of poetry in the style of Tho moi with their modern mindset and unique form of writing created a groundbreaking new poerty. The several decades ongoing disputation between the two opposing parties yet confirmed more and more strongly the victory of the Tho moi movement, and, that the new poetry was in accordance with the rules of times and human needs.

Cong luan bao was originally established as an organ of the colonial government. Initially it strongly opposed the development of Tho moi. Our research on the articles and literary criticisms published in the Cong luan bao will bring the readers some fresh points of view on the newspaper’s position towards the Tho Moi movement and the dispute between the “new” and the “old” poetry.
