On the implementation of methods for the protection of sovereignty over the hoang sa - truong sa islands of the nguyen dynasty

Do Bang

The Nguyen Dynasty has left a priceless legacy: The historical methods of protection of its sovereignty over the Hoang Sa - Truong Sa Islands in the 19th Century. Each year the Nguyen Dynasty used to mobilize to its maximum in- terdisciplinary Imperial forces in conjunction with local authorities of Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh provinces and fishermen to conduct economic exploitation combined with the exercise of rights to protect its sovereignty over the marine islands. By implementation of this method of exercising its duty rights, Vietnam (Dai Vietnam) under the Nguyen Dynasty remained the only force in power over the Hoang Sa - Truong Sa Islands.

Including the subject “sovereignty over the hoang sa - truong sa islands” into textbooks - a sacred duty

Bui Tat Tuom

This study elaborates education issues concerning the national sovereignty over Vietnam’s maritime borders and maritime island, including education in aware- ness building about the sovereignty over the Hoang Sa – Truong Sa in schools to- day. According to the author, the development of a curriculum on maritime islands in order to include it into textbooks needs to focus on two main objectives:

Honoring patriotism and showing gratitude to our ancestors who broadened our land, showing gratitude towards the fishermen, soldiers and sons of Vietnam who have been sticking relentless to our seas and island over the centuries in or- der to affirm the sovereignty of the nation.

Awareness about the sovereignty of Vietnam in regards to the Hoang Sa – Truong Sa must be related to the promotion of the role and potential of the Viet- nam’s islands for the economic and social development of our country in the 21th Century.

The author wishes that the curriculum on the sea and the island of Vietnam will be disseminated systematically in schools, and that the propaganda and education on maritime islands will be implemented on a regular basis in education activities with the purpose that the younger generation of Vietnam comes to a better under- standing of the history of our nation and develops a sense of responsibility for the protection of national sovereignty over maritime borders and islands.

Development of multi-disciplinary universities for global integration and in response to the high-skill labor demand of knowledge economy

Nguyen Thien Tong

If Vietnam has only piece-meal and slow changes without a clear policy for fundamental reform in higher education system with measures for merging and restructuring narrow disciplinary higher education institutions into multi-discipli- nary universities with full autonomy, Vietnam higher education will continue to be inefficient and can not response to the high-skill labor demand for development.

A higher education reform in early 1990s is for the establishment of multi- discilolinary universities folowing the university model of England and America which includes research institutes. Multi-disciplinary university model should be clearly defined in Higher Education Law 2012 to create a legal framework for a unified management of higher education system and to abolish the old system of various ministrial mamagement of different higher education institutions and research institutes.

Multi-disciplinary university model and university autonomy have not been considered as important issues so that higher education will continue be ineffi- cient and can not response to the high-skill labor demand of knowledge economy.

the emperor - author: zen-monk and poet tran thai tong (1218-1277)

Nguyen Huu Son

Tran Thai Tong (1218-1277) was the first king of the Tran Dynasty (1225- 1400) and the first of what later to be called “author-emper”, Zen-monk and poet. In the works of Tran Thai Tong we hear the bold imperial voice, and yet at the same time see how he lives in the realms of life and penetrates the realm of Zen meditation in order to be an emperor and also a monk. Going further, he widened the boundaries of aesthetic ideas using the language of literature. His aim was to build the Dynasty on the foundations of Confucian institutions and by propagating Buddhism.

the repentance and reconciliation themes in two novels by korean writers about the war in Vietnam (The Shadow of armas - 무기의 그늘 by hwang suk Young and Time for lobster eating - 시간 바다 가재 by bang hyun suk)

Nguyen Thi Thanh Xuan

Repentance and reconciliation are two of the greatest subjects in world lit- erature. Repentance refers to one’s capacity to question oneself to be reborn, and reconciliation reflects a leniency for the sake of co-existing in peace.

Incidental yet crucial steps of history brought South Korea to Vietnam in a negative situation: the America-Vietnam war. As they walked out of that bog, Ko- rean writers looked back on the past that they themselves or their nation have gone through, with a restless heart.

The present essay inspects two novels written about the America-Vietnam war: The Shadow of Arms, by Hwang Suk Young, and Time for lobster eating, by Bang Hyun Suk, from the eye of Thematic Criticism.

The Shadow of Arms was publicized in 1985, and translated into English in 1994 and French in 2003. Time for lobster eating was publicized in 2003, and translated into Vietnamese in 2005. The two authors come from two different gen- erations: the former, who directly participated in the war, wrote from an insider’s view, while the later, growing up in the post-war era, reflects on the echoes of South Korea’s history and the experience of peace in Vietnam.

Literature does not halt at the past. Fictions are open spaces. From here emerges an honest and equal conversation between the South Korean and Viet- namese peoples about the present and the future...

Keywords: repentance, reconciliation, thematic criticism, South Korea, Viet- nam, America-Vietnam war, The Shadow of Arms, Hwang Suk Young, Time for lobster eating, Bang Hyun Suk.
