The University of Van Hien was established by Decision No. 517/TTg on July 11, 1997, and converted to private status by Decision No. 58/QD-TTg on December 28, 2016, issued by the Prime Minister of the Government. Aspiring to contribute to culture, knowledge, preserve the tradition of learning, and train talents for society, Van Hien University chose the symbol of Khuê Văn Các, located in the precinct of the Temple of Literature – Quoc Tu Giam, as its logo and emblem.
On November 8, 1999, the Ministry of Education and Training issued Decision No. 4833/QD-BGD&DT/DH allowing Van Hien University to offer 10 undergraduate programs. The first enrollment for the university (1999 - 2003) welcomed over 900 students in fields such as Literature, English, Economics, Tourism, Computer Science, Social Studies, and Psychology.
On October 31, 2012, the Hùng Hậu Development Joint Stock Company became the sole comprehensive investor of Van Hien University. With a dedication to building an applied, diverse, and internationally integrated university, focusing on preserving and promoting the cultural identity of Vietnam, and adapting flexibly to the country's socio-economic development needs, the university follows the educational philosophy of "Become a Virtuous Person Before Becoming Famous."
With the aim of training students to become global citizens ready to integrate and adapt to work environments in different countries, the university consistently implements practical training programs, emphasizing language proficiency, and soft skills development for students. As a result, 85% of Van Hien graduates find employment in their respective fields, serving as concrete evidence of the university's efforts.

In recent years, Van Hien University has continuously expanded its network of partnerships with reputable institutions worldwide, including South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Germany, Russia, France, Canada, allowing students to study and work abroad annually.
Having undergone more than 27 years of formation and development, Van Hien University has earned the trust of students and is recognized as a prestigious higher education institution in the Vietnamese university system. As a multi-disciplinary university offering various academic levels, the university currently provides 2 doctoral programs, 5 master's programs, and 39 undergraduate programs in fields such as Economics and Management, Tourism, Social Sciences and Communication, Engineering and Technology, Health, etc. The faculty consists of highly qualified experts, including leaders and managers from organizations and enterprises, ensuring that lectures are practical and application-oriented.
In February 2019, Van Hien University officially became a member of the ASEAN University Network - Quality Assurance (AUN-QA). On June 6, 2020, the university was honored to receive the decision and certification of education quality assessment. In May 2021, the university continued to achieve educational quality certification for 2 regular undergraduate programs in Information Technology and Hotel Management.

Van Hien University is undergoing rapid and continuous transformation, aligning itself with the digital era. The human resources are strengthened, and the facilities are increasingly modern to meet the academic and extracurricular demands of students. At the beginning of 2021, the university's campus on Nguyen Van Linh Avenue, Phong Phu Commune, Binh Chanh District, in the Southern City Urban Area, was officially put into operation with a total area of 60,000m2.
